Sylvania was platted in 1836. A postal service called Sylvania has been in operation since 1859. Sylvania was incorporated in 1867. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 6.53 square miles (16.91 km2), of which, 6.48 square miles (16.78 km2) is territory and 0.05 square miles (0.13 km2) is water. Sylvania is approximately 10 miles west-northwest of Toledo, Ohio.
