Mayfield Heights was initially assembled up as a streetcar suburb. It was incorporated as a village in 1925 and as a town/city in 1951. The town/city derives its name from Mayfield Township, now defunct. One locale in the city, the W.A.

Mayfield Heights is positioned at 41 31 03 N 81 27 21 W. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 4.18 square miles (10.83 km2), of which 4.17 square miles (10.80 km2) is territory and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water. The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 80.4% White, 10.3% African American, 0.1% Native American, 7.0% Asian, 0.5% from other competitions, and 1.7% from two or more competitions.

There were 9,662 homeholds of which 21.2% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 36.0% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 3.3% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 49.5% were non-families.
