Canal Winchester was established in 1828 by Reuben Dove and John Colman.

When assembly of the Ohio & Erie Canal came through Dove's wheat field, he wanted to sue the state.

The canal workmen instead convinced him that he would be better off laying out a town, because the region was midway between Columbus and Lancaster. On November 4, 1828, Reuben Dove and John Colman recorded the first plat for Winchester, Ohio, in Violet Township, Fairfield County.

Dove titled the village after his father's hometown of Winchester, Virginia. The first canal boat floated through Winchester in 1831.

In 1869, the barns came to Canal Winchester, bringing continued prosperity.

The village was titled Canal Winchester when the postal service was established in 1841, because there was another village in the state with the name of Winchester.In small-town legend, there is a story of how Canal Winchester earned its postal service.

With this, the town of Waterloo was no more and Winchester was a legitimate village.

In May 1866, the Ohio Secretary of State granted incorporation papers for the Village of Canal Winchester.

Canal Winchester is positioned at 39 50 46 N 82 48 42 W (39.845977, -82.811675). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the village has a total region of 7.61 square miles (19.71 km2), of which 7.47 square miles (19.35 km2) is territory and 0.14 square miles (0.36 km2) is water. There were 2,646 homeholds of which 37.6% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 3.8% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 27.3% were non-families.

There were 1,664 homeholds out of which 37.3% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 65.6% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 24.0% were non-families.

In the village the populace was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 years of age or older.

Canal Winchester host the Labor Day Festival which usually takes place the first weekend of September.

Highlights of the region include: Historic Downtown Canal Winchester, Mid-Ohio Doll and Toy Museum, The National Barber's Museum and National Barber Hall of Fame, Slate Run Vineyard and Winery, and the many antique shops in the Village.

Canal Winchester is also home to the Bergstresser bridge, which is the only standing wooden veiled bridge in Franklin County.

Canal Winchester High School's mascot is the Indians, and their colors are maroon and white.

In recent years the school has produced two Wendy's High School Heisman State Finalists in Greg Guiler and Andy Rhinehart, an award to the state's best high school student athletes.

Songwriter Oley Speaks was a native of Canal Winchester, and the Canal Winchester Area Historical Society has a compilation of his works. NBA player Byron Mullens Graduated from Canal Winchester High School.
