The region which became Beachwood dates back to the formation of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Before becoming an autonomous city, the region was a part of Warrensville Township. In 1915, Beachwood seceded from Warrensville after the Township voted to close a close-by Beachwood-area school.

A petition was organized, and on June 26, 1915, Beachwood was incorporated into an autonomous village.

Beachwood attained full town/city status in 1960. Beachwood was titled for the various Beech trees that interval throughout the village. The origin of the spelling of the City is disputed.

There were 5,064 homeholds of which 24.9% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 50.1% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 2.0% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 40.7% were non-families.

The median age in the town/city was 52.5 years.

19.6% of inhabitants were under the age of 18; 3.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 17.2% were from 25 to 44; 27.2% were from 45 to 64; and 32.3% were 65 years of age or older.

Beachwood is served publicly by the Beachwood City Schools, which includes Beachwood Middle School and Beachwood High School.

There are also two private Jewish schools in Beachwood.

Stone Yavne High School, a Bais Yaakov Orthodox Jewish school that educates Jewish girls from 7th to 12th grade, as well as a Jewish day school, and Mandel (Previously known as Agnon), which educates Jewish kids from preschool through 8th grade.

Beachwood Place, an upscale shopping mall featuring stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom, is positioned in Beachwood.

The Cleveland Jewish News is a weekly Jewish journal headquartered in Beachwood.

The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage is positioned in Beachwood and is dedicated to furthering an understanding of Jewish immigrant history & culture in the U.S.
